Webventure Artist Statement

Through this webventure, I wanted to create a conversation about famous classical sculptures and historical figures (Michelangelo’s David, Venus de Milo, and a bust of Julius Caesar). By allowing you to control the choices they make, I wanted to bring them alive and give them more of a vibrant personality than you would get from just looking at a marble statue. I added some personality traits that were stereotypical for these characters and others that were surprising. This web adventure, if expanded, could be an introduction to the fine art sculptural world for children or budding artists. In order to keep it engaging, I used GIFS and humor incorporating modern day scenes. Seeing dog poop on the sidewalk or the inside of a vintage grocery store recontextualizes these otherwise cold statues in a modern and relatable way. In the future, I would like to add more historical facts throughout the web adventure so that “explorers” can learn while enjoying themselves.
